The Boys of the house

I thought I would give a quick update on the boys of the house.  Porter is changing so much.  He is learning and growing tons.  Here are a few of his current favs.

He is still very much into dancing and he will run from another room to bounce up and down when he hears his fav songs come on.

Tonight he was carrying around this beautiful skirt and trying to get it on.  FInally he took it took Chant who helped him step into it.  He wore it from about 6-7:30 and cried when we took it off.  He was having fun playing prince and princess with the girls.

He also likes the make-shift crown.  (The inside of a plastic baseball hat.)

He refuses to let me feed him anymore.  I tried as long as I could, but he is Mr. Independent now.  Notice he is still holding the spoon in the left hand ;)

He loves boxes and stuffed animals

The new favorite activity is to visit the duck pond.  He carries on quite the conversations with the ducks and can quack as loud as they can.  He is also fluent in mooing and neighing.

The man of the house started clinic last Monday.  It has been one week and so far so good.  Our lives are a little more hectic and he gets home a little later than before, but we are still doing good.  And we are so proud of Chant for working so hard!

Ramblings of the sick

I very rarely write about myself on my blog.  Most of my posts concern my children and the goings-on in our home and life.  But every once in a while I am struck with the urge to become an open book.  Perhaps this feeling today comes from 2 weeks of feeling overall generally icky.  (I have had some problems with my ears and a possible sinus infection.)  When I am sick I tend toward being pensive, melancholy, or generally self-reflective.  Probably because I am thinking about the dishes that are still in the sink, the Goldfish crackers ground into the carpet in the living room, or the laundry laying in a heap on my bed waiting to be folded and put away, which ocaccsionally makes me feel like a failure as the homemaker and then the wheels start turning.  I instantly feel overwhelmed and down on myself.  So, why would these feelings make me want to be an open book?  Over the past year I have been introduced to NieNie, or Stephanie Nielson and her sister cjane.  I was introduced to them shortly after Stephanie and her husband Christian were in a plane crash.  I have recently started reading cjane's blog.  I have started by going back into her archives and reading from the time Stephanie had her accident.  Reading their posts have been an inspiration to me.  I have learned so much from their words and the perspective they have.  I have learned to enjoy life to the fullest and take time for the little things.  I have felt uplifted, comforted, and loved as I have read the words of people I have never met before.  But they have become a part of me.  I find myself thinking, "What would Nie do to make this more special."  She has made me want to be better.  She is truly an example to me.  But in order for me to get to know her, she has had to open herself up.  She shares her thoughts, her feelings, and what is most important to her.  She shows that the little things are not little.  Just this morning I was reading cjane's blog and her sister-in-law was a guest writer in an October 2008 post.  This sister-in-law wrote about perspective.  She said it is so easy to be down on ourselves because we haven't progressed, but it is all about perspective.  If we look at ourselves from day to day, we won't see the changes.  But if we look at ourselves from year to year we can see how we have grown.  I like that.  All too often I get down on myself for not doing something or being better at something.  That is what the past two weeks have been like.  I haven't felt well, so I let things slide a little.  Dishes one day.  Laundry the next.  Bathrooms?  Maybe later.  Exercise?  Nope, since I can't breath right now.  But day after day I look at myself and say "Geesh, are you ever going to do anything right?"  Harsh, maybe.  But sometimes we are our own worst critics.  Rambling, probably.

So, next point.  I wrote a list of my dreams and aspirations in my last post.  Life changing goals they were not.  My dear brother responded to my list by asking if it is a bucket list.  To that I say no.  This list is about embracing the little things to make each day a little sweeter so that on this journey while I am working at reading my Ensign article everyday, I can enjoy some sweet moments dancing in the living room with my kids to the sweet melodies of my perfect playlist while wearing my purple slippers and pretending they are gorgeous, patent, red, peek-toe heels.

Back to the "open book" thing...  I may be struggling a little today and the previous 14 days, but all is not lost.  It is after all only 10:30 in the morning.  I am going to turn on my tunes, do the dishes, and play some ABC Bingo with the kids.  I guess I just had a feeling that I wanted to have my heart be known and share my trials and joys, like Nie does, so that today when I am struggling to get the baked on dip out of the pan I will know somewhere out there someone understands me and hopefully loves me a little more because of it.

Sorry if this was confusing to you.  It made sense in my cold-medicine induced fogged mind. ;)

Music Time

I have a guitar player/singer and a dancer.  Perfect!  Now all we need is someone to run the sound system and the lights.  Perfect job for Porter!  But really, Ainsley loved playing the guitar.  She played it a good majority of the weekend.  And my dancing girl was all over.  It was so fun.  I have no rhythm and I am not musically inclined, so I very pleased to see that my kids inherited those things from Chant.  It brings a lot of joy to our home.

Auntie J

Last weekend (Sept 10 and 11) we were blessed with a visit from Auntie J.  She is moving from Boston to Salt Lake and she took a few days to stop over during her move.  We had so much fun!  The girls had been waiting all week for her to come because she would be bringing her guitar, Red.  They love it when Auntie J plays the guitar, especially Ram Sam Sam.  Jen got here about 10:00 am Thursday, so we had all day to play.  And we did!  Chant pulled out his guitar and Jen and Ainsley played some sweet music!  Ainsley was loving the guitar and she was doing pretty well playing it too.  And we turned on Hannah Montana so Jen could see the kids do the Hoedown Throwdown.  It was such a fun day!  After the kids went to bed we watched The Cutting Edge 3 and funny You Tube videos.  Good times!
Friday we went bowling.  That was a ton of fun.  I love to bowl but my scores show I don't do it often enough.
Thanks for coming Jen!  We love you and we had so much fun with you!  Can't wait to see you again in a few weeks, we are counting down.

Brinnley and Porter doing the Hoedown Throwdown

Hoedown Throwdown

While on our trip we rented the Hannah Montana Movie.  Yes, I watch it and I like it, so much in fact that we bought the soundtrack for the drive home.  And we have already had many hours of enjoyment from listening to it.  It is the girls' new favorite, Porter's too.  "Hoedown Throwdown" is the particular favorite.  Here is a video of the girls dancing.  Brinnley has a new move.  She points her fingers and does this sliding motion.  Pretty cute.  Enjoy, I know I did!

Princess

So, vacation is over and back to everyday life.  We spent the first few days home getting things in order again.  And yesterday things started up again.  The girls started preschool!  They were so excited!  They had their outfits picked out Monday night and they were so excited to leave.  Preschool starts at 9:15 and by 8:00 they wanted to head out the door.  They had a great time seeing their new classroom.  Miss Becca, their teacher, has redone her basement into the preschool.  It looks amazing!  I heard every detail of the day from the girls.  They loved it!  I knew they would.  But it is still hard to believe Ainsley is old enough for preschool and Brinnley will be in Kindergarten next year.  Yikes!

While I was driving them to preschool I looked at the trees.  The leaves are beginning to change!  The first signs of fall!  I love fall.  The beautiful colors, the cooler weather, the warm smells of pumpkin and cinnamon, the crisp smell of the air.  I love it all.  It was one of those perfect moments, driving through Winghaven, enjoying the scenery, listening to my beautiful daughters belting out their favorite tunes from the Hannah Montana soundtrack, the new favorite by the way.  What could be any better than that?

Pictures with Opa and Oma

Opa,Oma, and the plan

We were able to spend a few nights with Opa and Oma (Chant's dad and step-mom).  We got there Sunday afternoon, August 30th.  It was so great to see them.  Frances is a wonderful cook and she made a few great meals for us.  And we had time to talk.  It was so good to see them!  Our visit was cut a little short because Frances got really sick with the flu.  We didn't want to be in the while she was miserable, so we left Tuesday morning.  Thanks for allowing us to move all of us things in and take up your whole downstairs with our stuff!  We love you guys!

While we were there we took Monday to drive around and decide where we wanted to set up a practice and move our family in just over a year.  We have been praying hard about this decision.  I feel like things went very well.  We have a plan!  We found what we think is the perfect location for a practice and we found our dream area where I would love to live someday.  I have talked about my favorite place in Missouri, WInghaven, before.  Well we found a place that has the same feel as Winghaven.  When we drove into the development, I got chills and I could picture myself there.  I could see myself sitting on one of those porches watching the sky change colors as the sun sets while Porter pushes a truck around the lawn and the girls play prince and princess.  I could just imagine Brinnley riding her bike home from the school that is located inside the development.  I could see us swimming in the lake on a lazy Saturday.  I could picture it all and it feels so good!  Where is this little piece of heaven on earth you ask?  It is called Daybreak and it is located in South Jordan.  Go here to check it out for yourself.  www.daybreakutah.com
I feel excited at the prospects of the future and it helps having something to work towards!

Gran, Aunt Kristy, and Auntie J

We were fortunate enough to be able to see Chant's mom and both of his sisters on this trip.  Kristy lives in Denver and Jenny is in Boston.  We met Margi in SLC August 28.  Late that night Kristy flew in and then the next morning Jenny came.  It was a great weekend.  We swam several times, shopped, looked at apartments, ate a special birthday dinner to celebrate both Kristy and Chant's special days, and spent time chatting.  I felt bad though because Porter had a fever and just didn't act like himself.  He wanted to sleep!  But overall it was a great visit.  The girls were even lucky enough to have Jen play their favorite song on the guitar, Ram Sam Sam.  It was a great visit!  It went to fast, but it was amazing.  Thank you for everything!  We love you all so much and can't wait to see you again next month!

The Huntsmans

Brinnley, Madi, and Ainsley

While in Idaho we were able to have dinner with the Huntsmans not once, but twice!  How did we get so lucky?  They are great friends and we really miss being close to them.  And it was so fun to see Adam's family again.  They are great!  We love you guys!

Goose Attack

One day Mom took me and the kids to Rexburg to play at the spray park.  Before going there we got lunch at McDonald's and took it to the nature park.  We had brought an old loaf of bread for the kids to feed the ducks.  There was a whole flock of baby ducks following their mama.  We had only thrown a few pieces of bread when 3 giant geese came swiftly over.  I hurried to grab Porter and then next thing I knew one of the geese was attacking Ainsley.  He was pecking at her chest and then bit her finger.  I yelled at mom to get her.  Now, before I go on you have to understand that my mom is terrified of birds.  I think that is a little ironic because she has her house decorated in birdhouses and there is a birdfeeder hanging just outside the back door.  But really, she is terrified.  If one comes too close she screams and goes crazy.  I've seen it happen.  So, back to the story.  I am yelling at mom to save my baby and she has this look on her face like she is thinking. "Do I go back for her or run and save myself?"  It was really only a few seconds before she ran to Ainsley and swooped her away.  The geese left and we were able to feed the babies, but Porter stayed a safe distance back and hid behind a pole of the gazebo we were standing in.  He had seen what happened to Ainsley and he didn't want it to happen to him.  She was fine really, but she is a little nervous around animals now, like dogs.  It is cute to hear her tell the story.  "The goose bit my finger and then Grandma saved me!"  Super Grandma saves the day!  Thanks for not sacrificing my baby to the goose!

A Dream Come True

Brinnley LOVES horses.  She has always wanted to ride a horse (actually, she has before it has just been a while).  There is a lady in Ashton, Michelle, that my mom knows who has horses.  Michelle told my mom to bring us over the next time we were in town.  So we took her up on the offer.  She got two of her three horses out for the girls to ride.  Brinnley rode on Classy and Ainsley rode on Ellie Ellie.  They had a great time.  I wasn't sure if Ainsley was going to want to ride them or not, but she got right on with Daddy.  She was actually more afraid of the little dog that was barking and running around than the huge horse.  It was perfect!

Whitmore Water Wars

Brinnley, Lily, and Luke

Every summer we get together with my parents and siblings and their families for our annual Whitmore Water Wars.  This year we went to Whiskey Bay.  We spent the day swimming and then made tinfoil dinners.  It was so much fun!  Brinnley is an absolute fish.  She loves the water.  Ainsley takes a while to warm up to it, but she had a ball too.  She mostly played in the sand and on the edge of the water.
It was a wonderful day!

Kirk and Tyler pulled Christi into the water and then pushed her under.  She put up a good fight though.  It was my turn later.  Tyler is a strong guy!  I didn't have a chance!

Ainsley and Dalton.

Lily warming up after a long swim.

Porter stayed pretty close to the food.  I did get him in the water for a while.  He had fun throwing a football and then chasing it down before the water took it away.  I also got him to sit with me in the huge raft for a while.

All the cousins chillin'.

Ainsley had fun running in the sand and playing with sticks.

My little fish.

Porter chillin with Grandpa and Grandma.  He was so tired, but I think he was still a pretty good boy.

The perfect day!

Family, there's nothing better!

Portia's cabin

One day after Mom got home from work we went out to her friend Portia's cabin.  We were going to swim but the water was kind of gross, so we played on the toys instead.  Porter loved the slide.  He climbed the stairs himself and sat down to come down the slide.  Once he slipped before he could sit and came down the slide with a jarring land.  His face had a stunned look and he just laid there.  Seriously, he didn't move forever.  We were all laughing too hard to help him.  Finally Kenzie rescued him.  He was fine, just dazed.

Kenzie was such a big help with the kids.  She even babysat one night so the adults could go to dinner for Christi and Chant's birthdays.  Thanks Kenzie for all you did!

The cousins.  Kenzie, Logan, Brinn, Porter (slimed with cookies), and Easton.  Ainsley was off to the side so I didn't fit her in the pic, but she was there too!

"You Need a Reservation"

One of the girls' favorite things at Grandma and Grandpa's was playing in the playhouse with the cousins.  When Madison, Kenzie, and Logan were there they would play restaurant.  It was such a popular place that they wouldn't even let anyone else inside unless they had made a reservation first.
Dalton (red shirt) was one of the lucky ones.  But then I guess being one of Ainsley's favorite people in the world helps a little.

Porter also liked playing with Grandma's pewter tea set.  I was surprised he didn't hurt himself because they weigh a ton!

P.S.  The couch in the above picture is my favorite place in my parents' home.  It is the most comfortable couch ever.  You sink into it the second you sit on it and the massive cushions on the back make it so inviting.  The perfect place for reading.

Need for Speed

Porter and Brinnley, (well okay, Mom and Dad too) loved the 4 wheeler.  Brinnley got rides from Mom, Dad, Logan, Grandma, and Grandpa.  She had a great time with everyone but Grandma convinced Brinnley that she was the best driver.  I don't buy that, but we'll let her think it anyway.
Ainsley wasn't so sure about it this visit, but maybe next time.

The Bike

Brinnley loved this bike.  She was outside everyday riding it from one end of the back patio to the other.  Her favorite was to come to a screeching halt seconds before hitting someone or something.  If these tires were made of rubber there would have been skid marks.

Porter also liked the bike and there were many tug-of-war battles between him and the girls when he wanted it.

The table and the Boy

The said table.

The Boy's head after climbing on and then falling off of said table.

We'RE BaCk!!!

It has been a while!  We got home late Wednesday night after 3 amazing weeks of visiting family and friends in Idaho, Utah, and Colorado.  It was a busy trip!  We did a lot, saw a lot, drove a lot, and had a lot of fun!

Highlights from the trip include:
1)  Porter discovering he likes to climb, climbing on a table, then proceeding to fall off of said table seconds before I reached him as I was frantically racing across the lawn to get to him
2)  Riding 4 wheelers
3)  Swimming and playing in the sand at Whiskey Bay
4)  Playing in the playhouse and playing kitchen with Grandma's fancy pewter tea set
5)  Riding the bike on the patio
6)  Playing with cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and friends
7)  Riding horses!
8)  Staying up late
9)  Getting ice cream with Grandpa
10)  Dinner with the Huntsmans, twice!
11)  Swimming in the hotel pool
12)  Seeing Gran and our two Aunts (quite a feat since one lives in Denver and the other in Boston)
13)  Staying with Opa and Oma
14)  Driving, lots of driving, in Utah to look for a future home

It was a fabulous trip and we feel so fortunate that we were able to see everyone and have that time at home.  Thank you to all of you for feeding us, housing us, and playing hard with us!  We love you all.

Pictures and stories to come!

Conversations from the table

Tonight we were sitting around the table playing ABC Bingo.  All was quiet when we heard a loud toot coming from a certain little blond girl named Ainsley.  She looked up at us with a look of surprise and said, "My bum is speaking to me!"  She turn her head back and said, "Bum, stop talking to me!"

I couldn't stop laughing!
